Weekly Update

This week we will continue with all the excitement that a new term brings with it. We have enjoyed beginning our topic on ‘Change’. We first looked at how we have changed since we were born and are now moving on to look at how materials can change. This week we made mud paint, we are very sorry about all the muddy uniforms that went home on Thursday.

Maths – for our maths work this week we continue to look at doubling numbers when possible and will also look at odd and even numbers. We have some cool activities lined up for this!

Reading –After managing to fit in some reading assessment last week I was pleased that this week some of the children are ready to move onto a new level in reading. I will be continuing with assessment this week for those I have yet to do.

Word work – We will be looking at the magic ‘e’ sound this week - particularly concentrating on the long o and long i sounds. Sometimes other teachers call it the ‘bossy e’ or ‘silent e’ but they all do the same thing and I make the children aware of this.

Inquiry - Our inquiry this term is about ‘change’. We have made a ‘wonder wall’ that is up in the classroom to write down all our thoughts about change – come and have a read, it’s really interesting! This week we will be seeing if we can make plants change colour.

Writing -  What wonderful authors! I am so pleased with the amount of independent writing that goes on in B2. We have a writing corner that the children can go to anytime they want to write. I often see cards being written or shopping lists or even letters. It doesn’t matter what it is, it’s just wonderful to see the children choose to write.

Te Reo Maori – We will be working with Mrs Rhodes and B1 this week for our Maori and we will be looking at another Maori legend. I wonder what it will be this week…?

School Values – ORCA – The symbol of the orca is very important to Whangaparaoa School and is carried with us everywhere, every day on our uniform.

Each letter of the ORCA stands for a different value:
O – Ownership
R – Respect
C – Collaborate
A – Achieve
We continue looking at these values and how we can take them on board in our classroom.

Home books - This term I will be incorporating some spelling words into your home books if you wish to learn these with your child. I will put new ones in every two weeks. The children are regularly assessed on their spelling knowledge so I will be taking words from the Essential Spelling lists that we use. There will be three at a time to learn, if your child can already spell a word please use this as a time to celebrate what they have achieved. Each child has a list appropriate for the stage at which they are learning. You should fine these spellings in your child’s home book this week

Remember in Term 2 and 3 we do not need to wear hats outside.

Library day is Tuesday

Sharing news is on Monday and Friday

Many thanks for your continued support we can’t do anything without you!
