Weekly Update

'Together we inspire learning'

Welcome to Week 8!
We only have three weeks left of term two and then we will be half way through the year. I have been writing reports for the past couple of weeks and looking at how much the children have progressed with their learning. They are an inspiration!

Maths – This week we take a step back to review what we learnt when weighing things. This is a useful way of assessing what knowledge the children have retained from our learning. We will also be working on place value and addition using different equipment.

Reading – It is lovely to see how the children are all making good progress with their reading. Many are going steadily through the levels. It is important that we also check the understanding of each reader. It helps with confidence if every child understands what they are reading about. Asking simple questions about the text can help with this.

Word work – We will be looking at the ‘fr’ and ‘ay’ sounds this week. For example, fruit and tray.
Inquiry – Last week we made bread! It was yummy and we have learnt that the kitchen is a great source for Science. We had some bread left over so we thought we would see what changes it undergoes over the next few days. Our predictions were quite varied.

Writing -  The children have decided that they would like to do more writing in class time so I have now introduced a writing book which can be used whenever a child has some spare time. We already write every day but apparently B2 are the best authors ever and love to do more!

Te Reo Maori – This week B2 will  be looking at Matariki and finding out what it’s all about.

School Values – ORCA – The symbol of the orca is very important to Whangaparaoa School and is carried with us everywhere, every day on our uniform.

Each letter of the ORCA stands for a different value:
O – Ownership
R – Respect
C – Collaborate
A – Achieve
We continue looking at these values and how we can take them on board in our classroom.

Home books – Please continue to read and learn your spellings at home. As it is an ‘even’ week (week 8) you should find some new spellings in your child’s home book. Please try to remember to bring in your home books every day, thank  you.

Remember in Term 2 and 3 we do not need to wear hats outside.

Library day is Tuesday

Sharing news is on Monday and Friday

Many thanks for your continued support.
